Objective: To study the prescribing pattern in cataract surgery patients in SIMS, for evaluation of their pharmacoepidemiology.
Material and methods: A retrospective study was conducted in the department of Pharmacology in collaboration with the department of Ophthalmology for a period of one year. Total 720 patients were analysed. Utilisation pattern of drugs like dosages form, route, frequency of administration and duration of therapy in preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative were audited. Drug prescription versus therapeutic indication was also evaluated.
Result: Different antibiotics mostly Fluoroquinolones, (like moxifloxacine (71.11%), gatifloxacine (16.66%), ofloxacin (4.16%) and, antiinflammatory drugs-bromofenac (54.27%), flurbiprofen (45.27%) and mydriatic-cucloplegic agents were prescribed.
Conclusion: The prescription was logical in respect of therapeutic indication. But in view of cost Moxifloxacin and Bromofenac could have been replaced by cheaper antibiotics and antiinflammtory drugs as Ofloxacin and Flurbiprofen.

Intraocular pressure is the pressure exerted by the contents of the eye against its containing wall. During general anaesthesia, the intraocular pressure can increase, rendering problems in ophthalmic surgery especially surgery on the eye bulb. Pre-treatment with non-depolarising muscle relaxant prevents fasciculation and so the intraocular pressure does not rise. This is a prospective randomized study of 100 patients divided into two equal groups, where we have compared the effect of vecuronium bromide and atracurium besylate on intraocular pressure. The intraocular pressure was measured before surgery, at the time of intubation and at every 10 minutes interval during surgery. All the data were analysed statistically using unpaired student t test. We concluded that vecuronium bromide has better control over intraocular pressure as compared to atracurium besylate.Keywords

50 eyes of 50 patients referred from outdoor patient department and causality department were examined by ultrasound- B-mode in department of radiology of Saraswathi Institute of Medical Sciences, Hapur. A membrane-like echogenecity was found between the retina and the choroids. The acoustic characteristics were studied. The usefulness for the differential diagnosis of retinal and choroids detachment was demonstrated with several situations of the choroido-retinal pathology. The thickness of the retina and choroids can be measured in routine examinations. B mode ultrasonography will be helpful in the evaluation of retina and choroids in the post traumatic and post surgical cases.Keywords
